Fasteners
Fasteners (screws,
nails) tightly holding the surface boards to the undercarriage are integral
to the well functioning of the deck. Here are the factors involved:
- Tightly fastened boards have
less chance of warping or cupping.
- Split ends due to poor fastening
cause the boards to become loose, which exaccerbates the split. This vicous
cycle eventually creates warped boards that look bad and impede traffic.
- Protruding or deck level fasteners
must be countersunk or replaced to avoid being hit with our sanders. If
this happens they become impossible to work with and will react with the
wood creating black streaks that run along the grain as much as 2 inches
on every screw. Many decks will already have this condition when we arrive
on the scene.
Part of our restoration
process is returning the deck to a healthy, sandable, fastener condition which
can vary from 10-30% of the total labor involved.
