This job was a maintenance job where the esisting stain was broken up enough to remove almost completely. This is the ideal time to do maintenance.

Light sanding

There are two types of mechanical sanding motions: Rotary and orbital.

Full sanding uses rotary sanders scrape in a continuous motion across the wood. Belt sanders, disc sanders, and drum sanders are the rotary sanders that we use. Full sanding is a component of restoration and includes 100% removal of paint, oxidized or otherwise damaged wood, semitransparent stain, and other maladies that cannot be cured with orbital sanding or power washing alone.

Light sanding uses orbital sanders create an orbital pattern, producing more of a buffing motion. We use orbital disc sanders, including an orbital square buff stand up floor sander. (Left). This is excellent prep for topcoats that are crumbling, and cracking but the wood beneath is still in good health.
